‘EXPLORING NINE ELMS’'
Project context
‘Exploring Nine Elms’ was one of a series of cultural projects aiming to ensure that local young people felt a sense of pride and ownership in a rapidly changing area of South London.
Situated between Vauxhall and Battersea, Nine Elms was undergoing large scale change, including new residential and retail schemes, the Northern Line extension, phased masterplan developments of Battersea Power Station and New Covent Garden Market, and the move of the US Embassy.
Led by Wandsworth Council and the creative education programme Cultivate, the project also aimed to connect young people with cultural opportunities and inspire them with the range of professional career choices on oTer in the creative industries.
Role
I worked as Creative Project Manager for ‘Exploring Nine Elms’, on behalf of Flow Associates. I selected and appointed three creative practitioners (an artist, a designer and an architect) and managed their work with schools and young people on a placemaking project. We ran a series of research visits and creative workshops in the schools and in the local area. In doing so we tested a process and set of tools for working together to inform best practice in this area.
Impact
The projects were well received by the schools and practitioners. A resource was produced to inspire similar projects in future.

“A BIG thank you for the ‘Exploring Nine Elms’ project. It was a great pleasure to work with you and I think the students benefitted massively from working with Wendy and her architectural knowledge and passion to share her experience”
